One other thing I saw elsewhere online was that sometime you will get the FAN ERROR on startup if there's an issue with the battery. I have th fan error on my T42. Make sure there is thermal grease between the heatsink and CPU surface. Can you boot the laptop back to "Fan Error" message?

If your computer is a T-410, I recommend you get the service manual from here. Maybe cleaning the cooling module will help. Could there be an easy fix, like some setting. If I am on battery power, no problems.
